3.7-ton whale found dead in Shandong
This 8.5m long whale weighing about 3.7 tons
was found dead ashore near Rizhao in
Shandong Province on Saturday.
The villagers immediately informed the bureau
of ocean and fishery of the case soon as they
spotted the mammoth whale. The staff said the
whale must have strangled in the angling net
and died. It has been preserved in a
refrigeration chamber for further examination.
According to Whale and Dolphin Conservation,
a global charity working to preserve and
protect whales and dolphins, 36, 773 whales
have been killed for commercial purposes
since the United Nations adopted a
moratorium in 1986, which banned commercial
whaling. However, countries like Japan, Norway
and Iceland continue to hunt whales despite
the restriction. This week, Japan announced the
resumption of its scientific whaling program
after more than a year’s break despite the
International Court of Justice’s ruling to cease
all whaling.
